Yoga Classes

Yoga is a time served practice of movement and meditation, over time it has gained popularity in today’s busy lifestyles, supporting health and well-being changes.

Yoga4Health

Yoga4Health is a 10 week programme geared towards individuals with mild depression and anxiety, those who are at risk of a cardiovascular event (as determined by having a Q-score of 10; established through a set of questions related to a person’s history, genetic predisposition, lifestyle, current weight, and biomarkers such as cholesterol asked by a GP), those diagnosed as pre-diabetic and those who are socially isolated.

Students of this programme may be referred by a health professional or may enrol themselves.  Feelings of isolation lead individuals into behaviours that lead to health conditions, poor eating habits and reduced exercise. Through connection, self-care may improve and better health follows.

The course is divided into 10 two-hour sessions, students can be seated or on a mat. Sessions conclude with a guided relaxation and then a discussion time with refreshments.

Many of the practices of yoga , learned in the sessions, can be used at any time of the day and in any location, providing people with easy-to-use tools to relax and improve their lives.  For example, some of the breathing practices can be adopted and used anywhere and at any time (and may help with, for example, anxiety and panic attacks).  Upon completion of the course, students are invited to join any of our variety of classes held at Holistic Health Hub Derbyshire as a continuation to maintaining their social engagement, physical fitness and well-being.

Yoga Therapy

This specialist form of mind and body training has established its place in prevention, management, and treatments of various mental and physical short and long term conditions. Our Yoga Therapy will aim to work individually with those who are in need and who can benefit from the safe practices of Yoga Therapy, regardless of age, gender, disability, gender identity and social condition.

A safe space to practise will be provided to reduce impact on people who may feel overwhelmed through a variety of physical, emotional, social or health issues providing a complimentary support system to conventional medicine.  Yoga Therapy is about adapting the class to the person, not the person to the class.

Through a combination of medical knowledge, adapted yoga practises and philosophy, a compassionate practice will work to improve health and wellbeing in a person centred approach, rather than on factors that cause disease. Yoga therapy sessions offer hope and possibly change through tailored practices, using the whole person approach.  Yoga Therapy has been shown to work through the connection between mind, breath and body, empowering each person to recognise responsibility for self-health. A trauma sensitive approach offers a compassionate and gentle invitation into easing emotional and physical challenges in everyday life.

Yoga Therapy is offered by our fully trained therapist in one-to-one sessions and for small groups of individuals focussed on a specific problem.

Mat Yoga

Yoga is a time served practice of movement and meditation, over time it has gained popularity in today’s busy lifestyles, supporting health and well-being changes.  Yoga provides a retreat from the chaos of work and life balance.  There are multiple types of yoga, from physically demanding practises through to restorative classes.

Yoga classes are not intended to be physically painful, but more of an intention to find your edge, this being somewhere you are aware of your body, but not fighting to stay where you are.  Some of the benefits of mat yoga include:

  • Improved body image
  • Healthier appetite
  • Supports weight loss and maintenance
  • Increases fitness levels
  • Cardiovascular benefits
  • Mental well-being
  • Social interaction

Suitable for all, through the use of props, every part of the class is accessible to all levels of capability.  Our class description will help you to decide which type of yoga you wish to attend.

Aerial Yoga

A most beautiful feeling of mind and body connection.  Aerial yoga is a yoga practice that uses a hammock suspended from the ceiling (steel framework), creating a loop.  Our hour long class will guide you through a practice of warm up, strength and stamina building then finalising with a savasana (relaxation pose) within the hammock.

Aerial yoga is known to build resilience against stress, anxiety, and loss of confidence.  It is also a good movement practice to follow for improving balance, mobility, alignment, circulation, and feelings of well-being.

There is no requirement for you to have previous experience in any form of aerial activity, although our foundation course will give you the basic moves required to progress confidently to a mixed ability class; beginners, intermediate and advanced.

Chair Yoga

A regular Yoga practice supports stress management, mental health, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep, it helps develop breath and strength of mind.  Yoga involves movement, meditation, and breathing techniques to promote mental and physical well-being, but what are the options if mobility is restricted, we practice yoga in a chair.

Our chair yoga practice adapts all traditional style poses to a practice seated or standing (if able) with the use of a chair.  This class is suitable for all levels and capabilities, but aimed at those who may find accessing the floor unsuitable for varying reasons.
